Djibouti deploys second battalion to Somalia

A second Djiboutian battalion has arrived to join the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), the Djibouti Armed Forces (Forces Armées Djiboutiennes: FAD) announced on 17 February.

The FAD released photographs showing Cougar mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles and a tanker being transported to Somalia. Djibouti News Agency reported in April 2014 that the United States had donated 15 Cougars to the FAD.

AMISOM announced on 19 February that FAD chief General Zakaria Cheikh Ibrahim had visited Beledweyne, the headquarters of the mission’s Sector 4 in Hiraan province, to inspect FAD troops based there. It released a photograph of Gen Ibrahim arriving on the XAC MA60 transport aircraft that the FAD acquired in 2014 to support its contingent in Somalia.
