DoD nuclear advisor confirmed as questions about funding persist

The US Senate on 9 December approved Robert Scher to be the Pentagon’s assistant secretary overseeing nuclear issues and Scher has said he would prioritise modernisation programmes for the nuclear enterprise, but questions remain about funding and the future of non-proliferation efforts.

The next assistant secretary of defence for strategy, plans, and capabilities said during his 2 December US Senate confirmation hearing that he envisions working to increase the funding for nuclear modernisation by about 10% from the approximately USD15-16 billion spent annually.

In his new role Scher will advise the secretary of defence on policy matters relating to nuclear weapons, missile defence, and security co-operation.
