Hacker group Anonymous is attacking Israeli government cyber infrastructure after the death of Orwah Hammad, a 14-year-old Palestinian with US citizenship, on 24 October.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Hammad was shot as he attempted to throw a petrol bomb at Israeli motorists near the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Under the title ‘OpOrwahHammad’, Anonymous is using distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to bring down Israeli websites. A DDoS attack involves a website’s servers being inundated with incoming traffic that eventually overloads the system. In some cases the server can fail under the pressure.
“‘OpOrwahHammad’; has officially kicked-off now, and Israeli government websites are feeling it,” the group said in a statement posted on its Facebook page and on 25 October.
