UK looks again at defensive aids EWC2 upgrade for RN ships

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is breathing new life into plans to equip UK Royal Navy (RN) ships with an enhanced soft kill co-ordination capability under the Defensive Aids Systems – Surface Ship (DAS-SS) programme.

Previously known as the Maritime Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (MIDAS), the DAS-SS programme plans the integration and/or enhancement of radio frequency (RF) countermeasures to improve surface ship survivability. The initial Electronic Warfare Command and Control (EWC2) component of DAS-SS is intended to improve the effectiveness of soft-kill systems and reduce operator workload.

Under the previous MIDAS effort, three industry teams completed Assessment Phase activities, culminating with demonstrations of EWC2 prototypes to stakeholders from the RN and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
