Indian Navy plans new carrier, SSBN base in Bay of Bengal

The Indian Navy (IN) is building a new base on India’s east coast to further boost force levels in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and to counter China’s growing presence.
Senior IN sources told IHS Jane’s that the new facility, codenamed Project Varsha, will be located at Rambilli on the Bay of Bengal, about 50 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command and the site of a naval dockyard. Scheduled for completion by 2021-22, the new base will house INS Vikrant, the 40,642-ton standard load displacement aircraft carrier under construction at Cochin Shipyard that is due for commissioning in 2018; a proposed fleet of 5-6 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs); and other warships.
