Ukrainian authorities announced Sunday that around 20,000 international volunteers had joined up to fight alongside Ukraine against invading Russian forces. The surge in requests follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeal for “citizens of the globe” to join the Ukrainian defense force last week and the lifting of visa restrictions for foreign fighters. In a clip released on Thursday, Zelensky said that over 16,000 warriors had agreed to help the nation resist Russian soldiers. On Facebook, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry issued a call for overseas volunteers, requesting candidates with battle experience and “citizenship other than Ukrainian, but… are fighting with Ukraine against [the] Russian invasion.”
