The U.S. Army’s 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) presented the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sgt. Anthony Best and Staff Sgt. Baltiera for heroic acts performed off duty. Baltiera saved a woman from drowning while swimming in El Salvador on November 27, 2021, battling severe conditions and a violent rip current. Best rescued a woman and her two dogs from dangerous rapids and protruding rock formations in the Cape Fear River in June 2020. He jumped into the water without regard for his own safety and successfully saved the woman and her dogs after battling severe conditions for about fifteen minutes.
